I have been raising chickens for 3 years now, and believe me, I have had more than my share of predators, I have learned is that there is a predator that will take only the head, and that is a skunk!

Hi welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry for your loss. :(

There are a few predators that will take only the head. Raccoon is also at the top of that list. They will even reach in and rip the head off through the wire if it's wide enough to get their paws through. :barnie

And in case you didn't know... rats are chicken predators too.

Raccoons, hawks, eagles, falcons, skunks, etc. will all take the head.
Sorry for your loss.
In my area our list of potential predators is:
  • Dogs
  • Foxes
  • Coyotes
  • Wolves
  • Cats
  • Cougars
  • Hawks
  • Goshawks (Not an actual Hawk)
  • Falcons
  • Eagles
  • Lynx (much like a bobcat)
  • Rats
  • Skunks (luckily no coons)
  • Black Bears
  • Grizzly Bears
  • Mice
  • Squirrels (steal eggs and chicks)
  • Owls (will also take just the head)
