hi all

new to chickens , we got 3 backyard pullets last sept .
so we are roughly at 6 months. no eggs yet but i suppose that is a winter thing
my rhode island red is looking awfully large and full of her self
did someone slip me a rooster ?
how can i actually tell ?
doesnt seem to have the tall , but look at that comb and waddle ????
thanks katt

Pullet a roo would have a rougher textured comb and waddles and they would be about twice the size so no worries you have a pullet.

*edited to fix roo

Shes a production red hen. (not a Rhode Island Red)

Quite right, but I think in the laymen's sense it's a Rhode Island Red. 99% of the time when someone says "RIR" they probably mean Produciron Red, so I say, what's the point correcting them, unless you're talking within a show/SOP circuit of folks. I use "True Rhode Island Red" to differentiate.

well not that i would know the difference . the 4H club i bought them from advertises it as a rhode island red and that is what i asked for and paid for . so i hope that they are teaching the kids properly .

I have a hen just like this that I got from tsc. They sold it as a rir but it's a production red. Honesty like stated it doesn't matter unless it's in a show. People call them rir all the time. But I believe to get a true rir, you'd have to find a breeder. Heck I love mine no matter what you call it. She's a great layer.
