I have 2 just under 3 week Rhode Island red chicks. I feel like the 1st one is a hen 2nd picture ?rooster? (The 3rd picture is the same chick from the second picture, just a full body shot). I know it's hard to tell from a young age but I'm seeing such a distinct difference in the combs of them both. Is this just an RIR thing? And they are maybe both hens? This is my first time rasing from chicks, Thanks

Too early to tell, update us around 5 weeks. If I had to take a wild guess, I’d say 1st pic is pullet and 2nd pic is cockerel. (Guessing)

Hello, I raised a RIR and she had a little comb too, but it stayed pale and waddles didn’t develop until later. I found raising chicks that the Roos comb will begin to turn pink by 3 weeks and waddles will be visible. Also, the wing feathers on cockerels are not as well defined “neat” in appearance they tend to be choppy looking and not as pointed toward their rear end. For now I’d lean toward two pullets, but possible cockerel based on the feathering and little larger comb.

They are both now a good couple of weeks older. Combs are larger and starting to turn pink.. roosters?
