Roost question

I've seen so many roosts made of branches, I've decided to go that way in our new coop.
How smooth do these branches need to be? the decent sized ones i cut have "bud" stubbles. Will that bother them?

They don't have to be smooth. They need to be thick enough for them to grab on to. I'm not sure how to explain it - like a baby hangs onto your finger. Not too thin. I cram branches in the wire fencing. They love it.
