Hello everyone I’d like to start out this thread by saying, I know I have too many roosters, and I will be separating two and making a bachelor pad asap. I know it’s entirely my fault for leaving too many roosters in together in my flock for too long, I had planned to seperate them sooner, but they had been getting along fine, and I’ve been having some bad health issues. I’m going to attempt to make this as short as possible. I have a mixed flock. I have Wyandotte, orpington, brahma, cubalaya, Rhode Island Red, and red sexlink hens- in total 21 hens. Although I have hopefully another eight girls in a brooder right now. I have three roosters, one is pure silkie, and the other two are silkie crosses I’m guessing. The one year old pure silkie Cosmo was my main and only rooster for a few months until I won a contest, got hatching eggs, and out of 18 eggs only two hatched and they were both boys. 😑😩 (also side note they live with 12 ducks but they do their seperate things) I love those two boys since they were my first birds to hatch ever. The problem is now they are starting to try to take over the main rooster role. They are both much bigger than my silkie boy so I’ve been worried that a day would come when they would decide they wanted to fight him. Today was the day. About 7 hens escaped while I was gone so I rounded them up quickly which upset the boys. Dot one of the cockerels clearly was chasing and attacking Cosmo when I got home. I ran in there asap to jump in between them and grab Cosmo for a once over. The poor guy is terrified and beat up. I caught it thankfully so it is not terrible but he definitely has some blood and feathers ripped out. He seems skittish and looks not as shiny and bright as he normally is. I seperated Cosmo for the moment in a mini coop I got for broody hens or such, but I’m trying to figure out what to do next. First I want to know if I should or could give Cosmo anything for pain, he was shaking his head and quivering when I got to him. The very tip of his beak is broken as well. I also want to know how to make the best bachelor pad, what it should include etc. as of now my roosters are not human agressive, and I will be very careful to watch for if they are. I’ll know if it gets too far and possibly cull then, but it’s very hard for me since they are like pets and I don’t think I could cull them myself. I guess my main questions are. Also don’t worry I will put Cosmo back shortly when I know he will heal and not get picked on, and when he is no longer in danger of the cockerels 😕

1. Should I give Cosmo pain meds? If so what?
And.
2. When I make a bachelor pad what should it include?

3. When I make the bachelor coop and run should it be far away from my other cooo or can they be next to each other?

Thank you!

I included some pictures of some of them- some are a few of the hens, some are of Cosmo(white and black) now and I think there’s one prior to the fight. Dot is the white rooster and Zip is the gray and red rooster.

What's the size of your coop/run? Recommended is 4sq ft in the coop per chickens and 10sq ft per in the run ... This tends to aleviate flock problems. As we all know bigger the coop/run the better due to Chicken Math.
As for keep Roos together, alot depends on the breed and the birds individual personality

Have seen recommended 10 hens to 1 rooster for the LF/large breeds
Silkies ... https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/silkie-hen-to-roo-ratio.1278284/

No clue about a Bachelor Pad but did find this ...

No, I wouldn't give Cosmo anything for pain.
He's just shook up a bit. The head shaking it likely because of the dried blood in the feathers on his head, it feels funny to him. You can wipe off the blood or use a bit of Peroxide on the feathers to help dissolve the blood and wipe it away.

Bachelor pads might work for some, but housing the boys in their own separate spaces may be something to consider.

Once Cosmo seems better, put him back with his Ladies.

The only thing I can really answer is this.
3. When I make the bachelor coop and run should it be far away from my other cooo or can they be next to each other?
In my experience, it is fine to have them near each other, but not sharing the same fence.
If they do share the fence, they will end up fighting though it, and risking nearly as many injures as if the fence wasn't there.
Being in sight or sound of each other has never been a problem.

Quick question, I have some extra drakes as well, when I eventually build a bigger bachelor coop and run, can roosters and duck drakes live together?
