Roosters climbing in nesting box, finding goo from smashed eaten eggs

I've got 2 young (maybe 7-8 months old) SFH roos in with 2 hens (and some 2 month old pullets for future hen relief). I keep finding only one egg a day, or no eggs and wet egg goop in the hay in the nesting box. Today I've observed both roosters climbing into the nesting box, for who knows what reason, and I'm afraid they're either being idiots and smashing eggs accidentally and then eating them, or worse, smashing eggs on purpose and eating them. The hens could be eating the eggs also, haven't caught the egg eater in the act. I've got a fake egg out there in the nest, but it's not deterring the problem at all.
