do they throw them out? or are they getting broody? I would put a lip on the nest boxes to give the chicken a harder time moving them

This thread is really great for ideas! Currently converting an old workshop to a chicken coop. Neither DBF nor I are super great with carpentry and I'm trying not to sink TOO MUCH money into this until I see how much I actually enjoy having chickens around. The workshop already has built in shelving and a counter. I'm thinking buying either a litter box or storage bin and just sliding it under the counter/lowest shelf. Would that work? Would I need to weight it down or mount it someway?

Also, how often do you clean your nest boxes? I have access to an infinite supply of sturdy cardboard paper boxes from work. I could maybe build something from them and just replace it when it gets yucky? Still worried about weight/stability. Suggestions are welcome.

I'm seeing boxes both in and out of coops. If I have chickens living in a run and coop, no free ranging, it's not a problem if I hang the nesting boxes (little giants) in the run?

How do people who use litter boxes or plastic bins keep them stable? Would a large paving stone in the bottom (covered by straw) work?

Dogkennel enclosed; dog house with nest box attatched. Suspended chicken feeders waterers home made dollar store items.

Just a typical side hanging nesting box...I've got shredded junk mail for the nesting box (I've since added a low "lip" to contain the paper in the box).

How well does the shredded paper work for you?
