I use shredded paper and have had no problems. When I first put it in they ate a piece or two (guess they thought it was worms), decided it wasn't tasty and left it alone. I like it because it's FREE! However, my chickens free range all day, so they are not in there all the time. We also have a dirt floor (I'm not convinced that it's not just years of old chicken poo, as the previous tenants had chickens before). ***Hubby says it IS a dirt floor in there*** But anyway, the shredded paper mixed with DE has been great for us.
