Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Thanks, I was hoping you'd chime in.

I'm not sure what sunburned feathers are. I googled, but not much there. Is it something that goes away?

I believe the qualifying for Naked Necks (showgirls) is the national show in Knoxville, TN....Dec 7&8. I know they are trying to get as many NNs there as possible. The standard was listed in the last newsletter from the ASBC.

Are they going to call them Showgirls? I think Naked Neck is the name for the original breed that was used to cross with Silkies to create them, correct?

they are calling them naked necks and showgirls

Here is a draft of the proposed standard:

Naked Neck Silkies

(Show-Girls)

Origin: United States

Notes:

Naked Neck Silkies are both bearded and Non-Bearded, and also have bib known as a bowtie. Exhibition Naked Neck Silkies shall be shown as bearded or non-bearded varieties. Varieties shall include the standard recognized varieties: White, Black, Blue, Splash, Buff, Gray, Partridge, and Self Blue.

Breeding:

While the exhibition Naked Neck Silkies is true breeding, they are a cross of the Silkie and the Naked Neck Bantam. To obtain true beards bibs and along with dark skin pigment and the silkie feathering you must breed in a true Silkie from time to time. Continuous breeding of Naked Neck Silkie will breed all non-bearded and non-bibbed off springs.

Shape of Male and Female

Exhibition Naked Neck Silkies should follow all characteristics of the Silkies Bantam breed (Bearded and Non-Bearded) except for neck, Beard and Crop area of upper Chest.

Bearded

Male and Female

Back of Neck: There should be no feathering from back of the head, starting just under the crest, all the way down to where the neck goes into the back.

Front of Neck: There should be no feathering starting under the lower beak, except where there should be beard, all the way down to end of neck and the crop area of the upper chest; except where a bib is present.

Beard: Same as regular Silkie breed except beard may be thinner in thickness and not as abundant in length.

Bib (Known as Bowtie): An abundance of soft silkie feathering at mid to lower neck forming an oval to round formation of feathering covering the lower neck and upper crop area of the chest and blending feathers on each side of shoulders. Lower section of crop area bare and free of feathers, bib should be wide enough vertically to almost conceal this area. As a whole forming a bibbed like appearance to lower neck area.

Non-Bearded Male and Female

Back of Neck: There should be no feathering from back of the head, starting just under the crest, all the way down to where the neck goes into the back.

Front of Neck: There should be no feathering starting under the lower beak all the way down to end of neck and the crop area of the upper chest; except where a bib is present.

Bib: Same as Bearded.

Color of Male and Female

Note: Naked Neck Silkies are bred in all variety colors of the Silkie Bantam breed. All varieties shall conform to these color descriptions.

Disqualifications and Defects:

All disqualifications and defects of the regular Silkie breed shall apply to the Necked Neck Silkie. Also feathering in any area of the neck (back and front) except where beard and bib are present to be a disqualification. The absences of bib shall be a server defect.
