Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

Hey guys... Look what I woke up to this morning!!!!

When I went to bed it was laying on its back and didn't look so good, got up at 1:30 and it was in the same position, looked like it was have a spasm.. I truly didn't think it would make it to this morning, thought I would wake up to a dead chick... Got up at 5am to get hubby off to work and the little one was chirping and running around.. I'm not ashamed to say I gave thanks and shed a tear...

I'm sure Glad to hear it! Sometimes, Our Good Lord works in mysterious ways......WA-LA....Miracle Chick and You will remember this one.

Yes,I did help this one out, it was malpositioned and I didn't hatch these in an incubator, those are full of turkey eggs.. Long story short, they were a four days behind the eggs my hen was sitting on, when hers hatched I brought the four extra eggs in knowing she would leave them to care for the chicks that would hatch, I set up a brooder lamp and just waited.. Three days later I candled and two of the four eggs had piped the inner membrane so I moved the whole operation to the bathroom and jacked up the humidity... I call it an un natural incubation method because all these guys had for the last four days was a box with some hay, a brooder lamp and a humidifier and steam from the shower

I did not know that you had helped this chick out. Beware that chicks that have to be helped out of their shell, do not have a good, on the average; outcome. I would sure keep a close eye on em!

Yep... I understand, funny.. I am not an advocate of helping a chick out, believe that they will make it or not but holy cow, its a different matter when they aren't in an incubator with the door closed

Whoot!!!! I woke up to the duck and house finally fully hatched. Now they are laying flat still twitching. I do have to day Im glad these aren't my first water fowl. Because they are very different to chickens.

Just gave it some boiled egg yolk, it took right to it and a few drinks of water... I would like to take it to the hen tonight but will wait and make sure it is doing ok getting around.

I'm on Day 16 here and am gearing up for brooding new chicks and NOT having a box in my bedroom full of eggs.

That will be kinda nice for a little bit.

The meat chicks are out on free range now and are foraging like little dervishes today(they are 2.5 wks old)...it's always comical seeing chickens that small darting all over the hillside hunting for food. I'm glad they don't need the brooder any longer so I can use it for this batch of chicks coming up. I'll be placing a small roost for the meat birds to see if they will use it instead of sleeping in the bedding...sometimes they will and sometimes they won't but I have a feeling this batch will.

I'll have to figure out a different watering situation for these meaties so I can use my nipple bucket for the new chicks...and these meaties are too young to use the communal watering place without drowning in it. I'll try to rig another nipple bucket.

We are getting ready to have a good old-fashioned spring thunderstorm! I LOVE those!! Thunder rumbling all morning and the sky is dark, all the chickens just went for cover...even the little meaties~they sure learn fast! Bring on the rain!!!
