if you found tapeworms do you assume they may have other worms ?

does anyone know if the amount of ivermectin in gold horse paste is sufficient to deal with other worms ?

what does everyone do, just treat for what they see or do a ‘cover all the basis’ treatment spring/fall treatment program ?

soooo many questions , just trying to learn through others experiences and do the right thing

Many people on BYC who are worm “experts” say that ivermectin has lost some effectiveness against worms in chickens, probably because of it’s past overuse with mites and lice. Dawg53 and Casportpony are pretty knowledgeable. You would have to look at droppings under a microscope before and after treatment to confirm that. It doesn’t hurt to take some fresh droppings in to your vet for a fecal float, just like you do for a dog. They can diagnose if your chicken has worms and what kinds. Only roundworms and the rarer tapeworms are seen in poop. Dangerous capillary and gapeworms and probably cecal worms are not seen without a microscope.

Tapeworms are best treated with a product containing praziquantel. The common ones (Equimax and Zimectrin Gold) also contain some ivermectin which is not necessary. Other chicken worms are better treated with fenbendazole (SafeGuard or Panacur) or albendazole (Valbazen.)
