Speckled sussex chicks

To the OP, I would get hold of the place you git your chicks, let them know. RIR chickens are nice too though. :).

They aren't RIRs as they have the wrong skin color. My guess is that they are Sussex, just not of the speckled variety.

Hi guys, just thought I'd give a quick update. It's happy news - they are indeed speckled! Rather annoyingly, the ones with the best looking speckling pattern are most likely roosters! Ah well :)

My girls had the same colour down. The 2 darker ones turned out to be sexlinks and the lighter one was a speckled (first pic). Some people in Australia have found chicks with light down have more white. I've recently hatched some ss chicks and all but one have light down. The other one has the dark markings on its head and back like the usual ss chicks so I'm interested to see how they turn out.

Is the rooster a ss? If not none of the chicks will look like ss but all would be split to mottled

Yeah my roo is a SS. I know that both parents must possess the mottled gene for the offspring to have mottling. This will be the first lot of chicks I've hatched from my roo and hens so I'm not sure how the chicks mottling will turn out. I'm pretty sure they're all from my sexlink girl as the other sex link and speckled hen were molting at the time I was collecting the eggs. I've bred my sexlink girls with my roo to get bigger frames on the chicks when they mature. Was just interesting the different down my current lot of chicks have.

Yep sure are! For future reference, from what I have seen, Speckled Sussex in the United States have a different genetic background then those overseas. In the US, the chicks have the typical chipmunk pattern but elsewhere they do not. Jubilee Orpington chicks in the US also look like yours due to their differing genetics from US Speckled Sussex. I typically use language used or locations to try and gauge out what traits to look for. Your spelling of colouring gave it away right off the bat! 😉
