This is what we have to work with ... it is a huge fenced area and a leftover dog house... what can I do to keep chickens here..

Well the basic needs in a chicken coop are the following: nesting boxes, roosting bars, room enough so they are not cramped, and ventilation. Also make sure it is predator proof.
