This is the "husband" responding. My wife did a great job answering the questions. She had so much to do with the design of the coop. As we all know she loves her baby girls!!
To answer this question, I used automobile oil drip trays. They can be found at any auto parts store. They can be modified very easily. The reason we used them is our own coop was a mess when we inherited it. I decided to use pans that are easily removable for cleaning.
The columns were made from..get this..4" PVC drain pipe. I just made the base and caps out of wood that I routed the edges on.
The outside perimeter of the run I used 2"x12" treated lumber buried so that if a predator wants the chickens they are going to have to work for it.
BTW...We are working on getting chickens for him and delivering them tomorrow. I will take some new pics of the coop painted with the chickens enjoying their new home.
I'm heading to see another guy this evening about his chickens.
