The Old Folks Home

at dinner tonight I told everyone about the discussion about bisquits and gravy.... grandma said "I dont cook any more" but I asked her if she ever made biscuits.. She grinned "All the time" I said When ... was I a cognizant human being then?.

I made biscuits with my momma.... one time when Momma and Daddy were out working the farm I decided to surprize them by cooking dinner.... It came out horribly and I had to bury them in the yard.... Before Momma found out.

We all about fell off the chairs laughing. Come to find out she was talking about when she was nine...

Explains why I never remember her making biscuits

as I said the unfavored son and his wife where here over Christmas eve
she asked how I made gravy she watched as I ladled juice from the turkey
to a skillet then put flour in told that was rue .... this morning she wanted to learn how to make gravy
she asked me to show her I did, she now believe She is ready to make gravy

Just because one "believes themselves ready to make gravy" does not necessarily make it so... It is so basic and simple that many can't grasp the concept and screw it up time after time...

Happy day after Christmas everyone

Sausage gravy and homemade drop biscuits a southern breakfast staple? Gee, I was raised being taught it was a food group!!!

What a crazy weather Christmas!!!
Yesterday started with an inch or two of fresh sticky snow, so pretty. Next came the grapple. (you know, those little icy snowy balls that bounce all over)
Then a little freezing drizzle and later came the real snow for a while. Right after dark the serious freezing rain started and stopped, then came down in sheets.
Before bed it was quiet, a big sigh of relief. We made it! Ice not too thick and no power loss!
Then, at 1 a.m. the grand finale, BOOM!!! Flash, rolling thunder! Must have been reflecting off the snow because everything lit up over and over again!
A thunderstorm in the northwoods on Christmas??? I honestly do not remember that happening, ever!
This morning was a fun trip to the coop. Crampons on the boots watching the poor little pup go sliding by me down the slight slope toward the coop.
Kicking and pounding the ice to get the gate and the popholes open. The rainwater that came down too fast to freeze was running into the covered area
between the coop and greenhouse. Aught to make a nice skating rink soon. The sun is out now but the temp is supposed to drop all day to be down into
the teens by dark and the wind is already beginning to howl and will only get worse according to all the high wind warnings posted for the rest of the day.
My plans of heading to town today for a little after Christmas sale insanity is out of the question with all the travel warnings of ice covered roads.
(Of course, did I mention our Christmas miracle? We actually got our car back late Friday afternoon)
Hybernation and roast beast leftovers. Guess that actually isn't such a bad way to spend Monday, hey???

Nothing say "love" like hot biscuits! DH very partial to biscuits and gravy. I like sweet potato biscuits smothered in habanero peach jam, although the biscuits all by themselves earns entree into relatives' homes.

re: gravy
Toasting the flour beforehand makes for really yummy gravy.

Dinner last night was prime rib, creamed spinach, scalloped potatoes, baby greens salad with walnuts, dried cranberries and goat cheese with a cranberry/pear balsamic dressing. Neighbors brought a rummy pound cake for dessert. Copious amounts of eggnog. At bedtime, visions of sugar plums danced in our heads....
