The Sussex thread!

Smelling chickens? I can't say that I've noticed much odor. Now when I gave my dirty white hen a bath, I learned 2 things:
1. Chickens like the blow dryer
2. The unique earthy smell of wet chicken. Yuck!

Here's the AFTER. What a pitiful look!

Anyone have pics of 5-6 week old speckled pullets? I have one SS chick from my last hatch and I'm in denial.

I can't tell that soon on mine. I have 6 week olds still in the brooder. If it ever stops raining, I'll move them out. One I would guess is a cockerel. I can't tell on the others yet. I have some that are probably 10 weeks and I'm sure 4 are cockerels and 2 are pullets. The other 4 I'm not sure on yet. Generally, all the blond chicks I can count on being male. That's held true on all of my hatches so far. I know that's not true for everyone. I wish I could tell sooner. I'm ready to sell some, but no one wants to take a chance on cockerels.
