Just set 21 Speckled Sussex, 12 Light Sussex, 7 Coro/Light Sussex.

I put one of my own Light Sussex eggs into lockdown, and I have other Light Sussex eggs due this week, and next week. Keep your finger's crossed for an awesome hatch rate!!

Bumble foot starts with some kind of injury that becomes infected. I would think that you have something that is causing injury. I have many very large Sussex and no bumble foot. Our farm is at the mouth of a canyon and is extremely rocky. So rocky in fact that we have a gravel pit next to us.

Do you have wire in your coops floors or anything like that? What are you roosts made of and how high are they.

I had 2 silver sussex chicks hatch today. One has a totally yellow face while the other has a mostly black with some yellow on it. Is this any indication of them being a pair??

As I understand it. The darker chick is showing that its genetics are more in line with more silver genes. The chick with the yellow head May have more of split genes. It will grow up to be silver in color however.

Silver/Light split chicks that hatch mostly black with mature to be silver in color. Chicks that hatch yellow that are silver/ light split chicks will grow to be light in color.

Good luck

riverrockfamilyfarm]NEW SUSSEX COLOR (CUCKOO)

A friend of mine purchased a bunch of Silver Sussex and Silver/Light split chicks from Paul Branshaw at Greenfire Farm. As the chicks matured one of them showed barring in its feathers. When she told Paul about it he wanted to buy the chick back from her so he could develop the color.
She kept the chick and now three generations later the beginning of, or should I say the rebirth of a new Sussex color that is breeding true.
I found a picture from 1925 of a Cuckoo Sussex but no further info.
These are pure Sussex no other breeds have been used in the program. I wanted to post pictures of my birds and see what you all think.

The Rooster is Second Generation and the Hen is a third generation pullet. I have also included some closeups of there legs.

I would really like to work with this variety so I am hoping for lots of input and breeding strategy ideas.

Hi,
I did some checking with the cuckoo Marans folk. They are also seeing black spots on the females shanks. I was told it's because the hens have only one barring gene while the males have 2. Also told that's the reason why the females barring is less sharp and distinct than the males.
Best,
Karen Tewart in western PA
