Tour of coops in Portland? Lots of coop pics!!

Portland Metro area chicken keepers and bird owners are opening up their backyard chicken coops to the public on July 28th from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

The tour is designed to educate Portland chicken and bird lovers on urban chicken keeping and provide ideas for new and creative ways to housing your chickens in your very own backyard. Participants will also be able to chat with experienced chicken owners about their coops.

There are a total of 17 coops on the tour this year, all sectioned around the Portland metro area. Maps and t-shirts will be sold the day of the tour at two locations: Garden Fever located at 3433 NE 24th Ave and People’s Food Co-op located at 3029 SE 21st Ave., from 10am - 1pm.

Tour booklets will have all information important to making this years’ tour go as smoothly and safely as possible. The tour is organized by Growing Gardens and Northwest Service Academy. For more information regarding the tour, please visit http://www.growing-gardens.org.

A Seattle group has been doing this for several years. Glad to hear other cities are doing it too. It gets a lot of publicity.

If anyone is worried about biosecurity, the Seattle group provides disposal footies at each location.

Yeah, I've never gone to the seattle ones but it's been featured on our local TV stations, and local papers, and was the front page of the northwest section of some weekend paper one year. There was even a segment on Evening magazine (a show on the NW) that featured the event!

We might very well go, but it conflicts with the Washington County Fair, so we'll have to see. I suspect our predator problems probably make the city coops unsuitable for our situation. But after living in Portland for 24 years before moving out here, we would like to support the effort if we can.
