We just finished building our rollaway nest boxes. Our black australorps, which aren't supposed to be laying until the end of the month, started laying early. They have been laying their eggs on the coop floor despite having ready nest boxes.

We used training eggs in our other coop but they are not roll out nest boxes on an angle. Where do you buy or how easy is it to make training eggs for the sloped nesting boxes?

I didn't like my rollaways, and the feelings were mutual from the ladies, so I got rid of them fairly quickly. That being said, what I did for mine is buy normal fake plastic eggs, put wire through them, and attach them to the metal mesh at the bottom. My rollaways were bought, however. Don't know how you designed yours. Photos?

Unsure how well it would function, but gluing something flat to the bottom of one (like something quarter sized so it wouldn't be swallowed) with a non-toxic/safe adhesive, or sanding a side on a wooden egg from the craft store might also work. Also, just a bigger dummy egg like a big plastic Easter one could work (but my girls always throw those out eventually haha).

We designed and built our own. I'm not sold on them yet but David likes the idea and wanted to try it

You could add bedding until they are used to laying in them, then let the bedding go thin and they'll acclimate.

I went with a combo. I added bedding and used double sided Velcro to attach eggs to the bottom because they were tossing them out.

Thank you for the suggestion!
