I really can't see where the benefits outweigh the problems you are going to encounter.

Interesting idea. I'd think that the main issues are drainage/moisture and ventilation. Moisture + chicken poop = mold = respiratory problems. Now, a chicken grotto might work, but not a buried coop or one in which the walls are all earthen.

I guess I see things a bit different. if you took a plan like the one above you could use up all your feed bags in the building and have a nice structure to work with.
