I just noticed that now one of my chicks has what looks like a large green pea under her skin. It’s obviously bothering her because it’s red around it!
ALL THIS STRESS WITH LOSING MY BABY DUCK AND NOW JUST NOTICING THIS IS GOING TO GIVE ME A STROKE!

Their brooder box is in our kitchen and they are spoiled rotten! They are loved and clean and get exercise!
They get vitamins and I clean their box every day!
NOW I JUST SAW THIS!
Dear God, am I cursed?
We adore our animals and I can’t bear to lose another after this morning!
I have not been ready to read the feedback on my duckling yet because we just got home from a wake, but I intend to respond to all who posted.

But now I’m WORRIED SICK TO DEATH OVER MY LITTLE PENELOPE!

What is this awful looking mass????

Thank you in advance for ANY information and if she’s going to die! 💔

Blessings,
Amy

What is your location in the world? Do you have tics? Do you have dogs and cats that may have brought ticks into the house?

Are these lumps hard, soft, mushy?

I’m in the United States in Connecticut.
We have no dogs or cats and the chicks have never been outside.
The lump feels mushy but I don’t want to hurt her so I didn’t press on it.
I’ve been googling for an hour and I can’t find anything else even close to this.
She is with 2 other chicks in their brooder box.
I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m scared because I heard chickens will peck at one that’s either I’ll or they notice something is off, but they are only 2 weeks old.
We are brand new to chickens, we started with ducks, so I am still educating myself about them.
Does this look serious in your opinion?

Thank you very much for your reply.

Blessings,
Amy

I understand your worries. Baby chicks do that to you. You didn't say where the lumps are located on the chick's body. Photos often do not convey this information as they are two dimensional.

What they look like to me are hematomas. Chicks have extremely thin skin, and if one of the other chicks is pecking at this one, it could have caused bleeding under the skin. I would say it's not that serious unless there's some reason the bleeding doesn't coagulate and continues to bleed. Eventually, the chick's body will absorb the blood and they should disappear on their own.

This is just a guess from seeing the color and shape of the lumps. There very well could be another explanation, but nothing comes to mind.

Is the chick behaving normally? Active? Eating? Pooping?

Watch the chicks and if you see another chick pecking at it, here is my article on dealing with aggressive chicks and what you can do about it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/aggressive-baby-chicks-and-how-to-stop-the-behavior.72029/

Thank you sooo much!
How sweet of you to calm me down ❤️
The bump is locked on her upper shoulder, bottom of her neck.
She’s not acting differently, and the other 2 are not picking on her.
There brooder is actually in my kitchen. Lol! So I can watch them closely and I could never put them outside yet as it’s still very cold here.
I’ll keep watching her, but your right, I can’t find anything that looks similar to this. It honestly looks exactly like a pea!
I just went to take another photo and I can’t find the lump, it appears that there was a slight amount of bleeding and now it gone I think.. 🤔
And is it normal to start to see their pink skin in places? Are they losing their baby fluff? And just one more question as I’m a newbie,, is my brown chick a “Chipmunk”Hen? 🐣
As I mentioned I just started with chickens.

Thank you again!
Amy

Yea it’s normal to see some pink as they lose baby down and grow in new feathers. And the birds are still way too young to sex. You won’t be able to until at least 6-8 weeks possibly later. Sometimes it can take 12 with some birds and sometimes it’s quite early. Just depends. But yeah. Try posting again in about 6-8 weeks.

Completely normal. If you watch, it even happens with ducklings.

There are few joys comparable to raising baby chicks. It does sound like the bumps were pecking injuries. Chicks may not be necessarily aggressive when they peck each other. It's more like they are investigating their world and each other much as baby humans investigate with their mouths.

Cuddle the chicks often and murmur sweet nothings to them and they will bond with you as future lap chickens.

This is also a great time to teach them to come to you by using an audible cue of some kind as you offer them treats. You probably should get some chick grit to be safe. They require it for digestion when given treats such as meal worms, bits of lettuce, pieces of soft fruit, etc.

Hi Amy I just saw you lost your duck I'm so upset I had highest hopes for him I feel so bad! I was looking for your posts but missed them the news came as a shock so sorry!
I just saw your post. Thank you soooo much for your kindness and condolences.
I was absolutely gutted as I’m so invested and a die hard animal lover.

Now we have 3 healthy babies. The newest one is 36 hours old and doing great. All 3 are. Our oldest is 1 1/2 weeks old and growing like a weed!

I just wish they didn’t run away from us because we are with them all the time!
It really hurts…

Blessings,
Amy
