They also told me to get the metal bar out, I don’t have anything in wood that’s suitable but they told me to just leave it out…

You can cut off a branch and just stick it between the bars.

Unfortunately it didn't make it Things looked like they were going better, but I found him dead this morning.

So sorry. Since we didn't know his backstory there could have been other hidden issues that we did not see. At least you tried.
