When will my chickens start to lay!!!!!!!

I have built a nest in the coop for them and have put straw in it and in the morning when i go to feed them the straw looks like it has been messed with by the chickens. Is this a sign that they are about to lay.

Mine started showing interest in nest boxes about a week before they started to lay. Mine also started squating at about the same time.

nope, but you can expect eggs at 5-6 months of age. they dont really give any clues as to when they will lay, you just walk out there one day and find an egg

I just put fake eggs in the nest today, will this help?

The fake eggs will help to let them know it is a safe place to lay. If they see fake eggs they assume it is a safe place. If you have no eggs(golf balls) and you collect them all the time, sometimes they think it is a predator stealing the eggs and will start to lay someplace else.
