So things are getting pretty serious for me now getting started with some quail. See my mistake here? Any chance adult Coturnix would be able to stick their head through there, or do I need to cut off the front and replace?

You could consider putting the feeder and water trough on the ends where your 1”x2” is the right direction.

Yes, I thought about that, but my manure trays wouldn't be long enough, and I'm trying to keep things as clean as possible. I think my fix will work though. Just need to order some troughs and see how they fit.
