Had a bird that was sick for a couple of days and then got better. But now it has "dirty" feathers around its vent from diarrhea, caked around it.

Should slap on some gloves, put the bird in soap water, and clean it off or just leave it?

Never leave a bird with poop on it's backside...as iwiw60 says...read the post on vent gleet and treat accordingly....whatever the problem, eventually flies will lay their eggs on a dirty backside and you risk "fly strike"...maggots eating away at their rear end....

Have you recently de-wormed your flock? Worm infestations can cause poop on their backsides too...time to get the gloves on and treat this sick one...

I usually cut all the nasty feathers off because they will just get dirty again. Then I coat the area with some ointment or oil or whatever I have available as a protectant.
