We've got a super sweet young hen who started laying eggs 2 weeks ago. She's 7 months old, named Lottie. She's been going along great, until three days ago. We feed the girls organic soy-free feed which we pre softened in water immediately before feeding. Three days ago we gave them a bunch of organic Kale. That evening everyone's poops stunk awful, as well as the next day. We were away yesterday, but yesterday evening I noticed Lottie had a bunch of wet poop stuck on her rump feathers, and made note to check her out this morning. We brought her in for a soak and gentle scrub to clean her up, but immediately noticed she appeared to have the worst case of hemmroids. Her vent was all distended. We trimmed away feathers, and gently cleaned as much of the crusted on debris as we could without harming her innerds. I then attempted to tuck everything back in, but everytime I did she immediately attempted to poop. The poop was not wet, but rather like golden mustard ( only green) . It also appeared that the parts that were distended were responsible for secreting some sort of white milky substance. Which was the majority of what's was cemented onto her bottom. After a blow dry and a snuggle in a towel near the fire, she's now headed for a separate cage inside near the fire to make sure she's good and dry before putting her back with our flock of 20 other hens. (It's 25-30degrees farenheit out)
We're concerned as to how to treat her. She hasn't laid her egg today yet, still distended. We've added some apple cider vinegar, electrolytes and a few wet canned peach chunks to her own food in her cage to help soften her stool and hopefully get her poop back on track. Other than the sorry state of her bottom, she's her perfect, sweet, happy, curious, hungry self. We'd hate for this to be her demise as she's so amiable. Any advice is so greatly appreciated.
