Hey everyone!
Our beloved Australorp x buff Orpington Lottie healed beautifully after having a prolapsed rump, however now a month or two later she's got trouble again. She came asking for help this morning when my husband noticed her bleeding backside. Our first thought was that she relapsed, however upon examination she was hardly distended at all, leaving us to think that the only explanation could be that some impatient flock mate gave her a nasty peck while she was mid laying this morning. We washed off all the clotted blood on her feathers to try to narrow down the exact spot. She had a tiny bit if internal vessel matter outside of her vent and what looked like a severed blood vessel about the diameter of a fettuccine noodle. While washing her up to treat things with wound spray and stop bleed, all of what was outside retracted inside. We sprayed her rump anyways with wound spray and have her quarantined in a small cage lined with a white towel to keep an eye on discharge. She has access to food and water, she ate only a few pellets. Has been drinking a little water, and has not moved all day. She's just standing still occasionally closing her eyes briefly.
Her comb is still brilliant red, not showing any signs of anemia. She still responds to us and is looking around occasionally fixing a feather. Not really any poop on her towel, just some small streaking of yellow and a few drops of brown blood.
At the time of her clean up it seemed her body was doing a good job clotting whatever the wound was, and after some online anatomy searching it seems like maybe what looked like a severed blood vessel, may infact be the rudimental right oviduct?
Because she doesn't look anemic, I'm inclined to think she's okay, but just in pain? judging by her stillness, lack of appetite, and eye closing.
We've no experience with this sort of chicken woe, so any input is appreciated.
Do chickens normally heal from something like this?
