We had recently gotten a new smaller fence to let the chickens run around in when we aren't around. When we went inside for only a minute, the dog got out and INSIDE the fence with the chickens! As soon as it happened we ran out and grabbed her, and all the chickens (thankfully) are alive! but...
so first: yay!!!! one of my chickens have started laying!!!! but heres the thing: they keep their nesting boxes very clean, until they lay the egg! then its a mess! they did out the newspaper and pine shavings and toss it onto the floor of the coop! dont know really what to do
help! how do i keep my chickens from pooping in their nesting boxes??? the nesting boxes are near the bottom of the coop so under the perches, so they must not be sleeping in them...??? any suggestions???
right now my lovely chickens are about 18 weeks, and i have read that this might be a little bit young for laying, but I'm a little confused about when to put the golf balls in the nesting boxes? Should i put them in once the chickens start to lay, or before?

After a hard year and a half of studying and preparing, we headed over to the local feed store to bring home six fuzzy araucana chicks!

My chickens are 13 weeks now, and i started to run out of food so i headed over to the feed store, they gave me layer feed, but my chickens haven't started to lay yet! is this alright? i don't want to waste the food, but i haven't given it to them yet just incase.
I have 6 5 day old araucana chicks, and one of them is particularly small. I automatically thought she was a hen, because of her size, but she has the biggest wings out of all of them, and I mean BIG!!! some of the chicks wings are only an inch long, but hers are about 3 inches! or over even...
