    Incubating Eggs before Shipping

No, I didn't. I just set them under my broody. The chick was a color that I dont have so it couldn't have been one of my chickens eggs.

Black Ameraucana Roo crossed with a Rhode Island Red Hen.

This was an accidental hatching by one of my bantam cochins. I wouldn't mind having this cross, but our Rooster is a really ill tempered, aggressive nasty fellow and I didn't particularly want to pass those fabulous personality traits on to a future generation. Who knows though, if one of these...

Do you keep a dog you can't trust with your kid?

He's not an aggressive biting dog. Jumping up out of excitement when a kid picks up your ball to throw it for you and scratching the kid is not aggression. One, it's shitty animal ownership. That dog is not trained to sit quietly and wait for the toss. Two, it's a BORDER COLLIE / JACK RUSSEL...

Do you keep a dog you can't trust with your kid?

Amen. I'm always surprised when people of child bearing age who know that they might be having a child don't do their due diligence in picking a dog. Rescues will typically ask if you have children and how old and place you with a dog that has a suitable temperament. Even better, a reputable...

Some causes of EARLY CHICK MORTALITY

UPDATE- So I talked to my vet (he keeps chickens as well) and he suggested antibiotics added to water, however I also talked to a woman who used to own a local hatchery and she thought it was the weather and new unproven mothers. She was right. Since the weather warmed, haven't lost a single...

Do you keep a dog you can't trust with your kid?

I know this is an old thread but I have to respond to all of the people who suggested putting the dog down and tell them that they should be ashamed of themselves for suggesting such a thing! There are many dogs and people who dislike small children. There are also many many homes that do not...

    Incubating Eggs before Shipping

I am SO glad I found this thread. I thought I was losing my mind. I had a shipped egg hatch two weeks after I set it under my broody. I know it was one of the shipped eggs because it was marked and I wrote down the date I set it under the hen Day I received it) on the calendar as well as the...

Will a broody hen adopt chick??? Please answer ASAP!

Let me know how that goes. We just did the same and lost all four chicks in the span of a week. I've been asking all the chicken people I know and the consensus is that its too early to be brooding outside and that I should have taken all the chicks inside and brooded them myself.

Early Chick Mortality! Help! Any thoughts from fellow BYC members?

I conferred with a woman I know who ran a local hatchery and she is saying the same as many of you. She thinks its too early in the season to brood outside, especially with shipped eggs and first time broodies. Our temps have been all over the place. Last spring no one went broody until end of...

Early Chick Mortality! Help! Any thoughts from fellow BYC members?

Well I live in Arizona...so its usually pretty dry until monsoons hit. We did have snow last week and then fog when it melted the next day...maybe that was enough. I have a large chicken tractor that is off the ground. I was thinking, I should disinfect it, and put cardboard over the grate (so...

Early Chick Mortality! Help! Any thoughts from fellow BYC members?

I'm trying everything. This next batch I will have to take to the vet if it looks like things are going downhill...or maybe I should just take them from Momma and brood them indoors. I hate to do that to a good mother. Have another batch set to hatch on thursday/friday. I might just try to keep...

Early Chick Mortality! Help! Any thoughts from fellow BYC members?

Thank you. I didn't know what else to try. It's so upsetting to lose all of them. I can't think what it could be. :(

Will a broody hen adopt chick??? Please answer ASAP!

You will need to move her to a "ground floor apartment" otherwise the chicks will fall out of the nest and not be able to get back in. They will get cold and die. It's easy to do..especially if you do it at night.

Some causes of EARLY CHICK MORTALITY

I'm having a situation and not a clue as to what is causing it. Last year my broody hens hatched and raised super healthy chicks without any problems or mortality what so ever. This year I've had 2 hens go broody so far. One hatched 3 of six shipped eggs and those chicks did ok for a couple of...

Will a broody hen adopt chick??? Please answer ASAP!

If a hen is broody, she will accept new chicks if they are young. You could wait and try and slip them in at night. My experience is with cochin bantams who are great mothers and would adopt just about anything. I just put new chicks in front of her and she opened up her wing and clucked for...
