Off color / rough shells on eggs - PIC included

Reading it is says stress can cause it and to minimize disturbances around the coop. I have been building an addition on the side of my coop - I guess maybe that is what coudl cause her to slow down laying this week and lay this weird egg. Thanks for the link - that is a useful one for sure!

Off color / rough shells on eggs - PIC included

Cadbury, my SC Marans, has been laying for about two months now. She normally lays 6 and sometimes even 7 days of the week - rarely skipping a day. This week she has only laid twice in the last four days - once yesterday and once two days before that. The egg from four days ago is her normal...

Quote: She's doing just fine - she ate a lot and drank a lot after I got her out and by the end of the day she was running around chasing grasshoppers in the yard again with her buddy the bantam BPR We are so glad she is ok. Now I'm jsut trying to decide if it is ok to let her out with the...

RIP Lilly :( :( - WE FOUND HER!

I FOUND HER!!! She is ok! Somehow she managed to crawl down into one of the cement blocks that are the foundation of the coop! This morning when I went out to get the eggs I heard a muffled peep coming from the ground in the corner - I ran into the coop and got down and looked and saw a few...

RIP Lilly :( :( - WE FOUND HER!

Quote: I wish that were it - we searched the whole yard and the area around my yard - neighbors yards and the alley behind me - there was no sign of her. She usually peeps when she isn't with her buddy Athena and we didn't hear her anywhere either. I had heard cats won't usually mess with a...

RIP Lilly :( :( - WE FOUND HER!

We lost our Silkie today - she was 13 weeks old and out in the yard ranging with the full grown standard sized girls. I was home in a room where I can hear them and other than some egg songs early in the day I didn't hear anything. I went out mid afternoon to check them and to go pick up the...

    Texas

Quote: Is there anyone who isn't happier when the temp is below 100F? It feels like we're having cool front because it only got to 95 today. I was making the trek out to my car and I realized it was comfortable to be outside in a t-shirt and jeans. I hopped in and my car said it was 94*...

    Raccoon in my coop!

Thanks for the feedback - I am going to go buy the trap tomorrow. I kept the girls in until later in the morning and put them in well before dark tonight. I really hope I can catch the coon and not have another come around. I'm wondering if I shoudl set the trap in the alley behind my house -...

    Raccoon in my coop!

I have been away for a week for work and got home just before dusk so I let the girls out for a little yard time after a week locked in their coop and run. Later, the kids and I went out to lock the girls in once it got dark. The girls were in their house on the roost and there was a big...

    What are you baking now?

Quote: Oh Sandee how cool! Maybe we need a cheese making thread so you can teach us! I have been dying to try making some home made cheese but am not sure how to start - do you have a favorite book you can recommend or can you share how you got started?

when will their eggs get big enough to sell?

I read that pullet eggs (under a year old) are typically smaller, and once they are "hens" (over a year) the eggs are full size. Can anyone confirm this?

    Algae in waterer

Quote: Where do you find Oxine? I read the article and that sounds like a great solution for me - I like the idea of keeping everything under the "approved organic" list

    Algae in waterer

I am having a terrible time keeping my waterers algae free in the heat of the summer. I have read that putting a tsp of cholrine bleach for each gallon of water will help but I wasn't sure how to tell the concentration of the bleach to know if I should put less than that. Does anyone add...
