Need support for the Hens4Mantua Project - Lets make a change in Mantua, NJ

Hey there - What was the outcome here? Looks like Mantua code doesn't specify anything about chickens or livestock except to define it.

    Woodbury, NJ

Covering all bases - sorry if you all have seen this on other posts already. But just in case - tonight we will be discussing backyard chicken hens at the Council Meeting in Woodbury. I have chickens in Woodbury and have been "outed" and now it's a thing. We are asking at the most basic level...

No chickens allowed in Woodbury NJ (yet)

I think I know all of you posters already ! But just in case - tonight we will be discussing backyard chicken hens at the Council Meeting in Woodbury. I have chickens in Woodbury and have been "outed" and now it's a thing. We are asking at the most basic level that the definition of...

    10 chickens equals 1 dog

Hi folks - heard Joel Salatin at MEN Fair in Somerset last Sept and he said that 10 chickens equals the footprint/waste of 1 dog. I can't find this statement and/or "proof" after several google searches. Anyone know where I might find this info? Or anyone have a video of the part of Joel's...

at what point do I worry about temps

Thanks Bobbi-J - and you were right - they seem okay today (well, mad, but alive) but we have one more day of extremely cold temps - and I have 2 molters. I'm serving up a scratch bonanza plus some warm oatmeal. I fall somewhere in between the extremes of "growers" and "pet chicken owners" but I...

at what point do I worry about temps

I would also like to be talked down - my girls are in an unheated coop and I generally don't worry because the general chant is "as long as they're out of the wind"..... But today was in the 40s and it's already dropped to 26 and supposed to go to 8 (with -10 windchill) which seems like a...

Emergency of a different kind - flypaper and chicken feathers....

Thanks SIMZ - glad I'm not the only one! I did end up bathing her - she was just covered in the goo and I couldn't stand the thought of all the nasty things that might get stuck to her and then stay there in the heat. She dust bathed today and now she's just as if it never happened.

Emergency of a different kind - flypaper and chicken feathers....

So it seems my girls are now big enough for their backs to hit the fly paper when they roost for the night and I'm guessing you all know what's coming next... I got the flypaper untangled mostly painlessly from my Australorp but now she is COVERED in the sticky flypaper goo. I need to take...

    Coop color and egg production

Yup, here's your crazy chicken lady question of the day! I haven't been able to find anything on this (which is kind of surprising since it seems ya'll have covered EVERYTHING...) Anyone have an opinion or seen any research on coop color affecting rate of egg laying? I know I've heard things...

Coop wish list - what do you wish your coop had?

Chickencrazy- the door idea is what we did but only with the top half. I was afraid to do the bottom because of potential predator issues. Will you reinforce your screening to keep critters out? Akb77- that looks great - almost exactly what i was picturing. Thanks for posting! Hoping to get...

Coop wish list - what do you wish your coop had?

Glad to hear about the light - I wasn't going to cut that big window in back but it is so nice being in there with all the sunshine! RE: feeder and waterers - that's where I'm puzzling now. I was considering little pop holes that would let me drop in feed or a hose that would then go down a...

Coop wish list - what do you wish your coop had?

I'm in the middle of a shed conversion and trying to think of little details that will be easy to add and worth their weight in the long run (like a shelf beside the nesting box to set my collection basket on, etc.) - what do you wish your coop had that it doesn't? I'll be housing 12 to 15...

Using VetRx, Electorlytes, ACV for Baby Chicks

I didn't know that about the temp - thanks for that! It is warm but they are still piling up on each other so I was hesitant to bring it down. I'll drop it five degrees or so and see what happens. Things have cleared up pretty well now that they are a few more days old, too. I have one girl who...

Using VetRx, Electorlytes, ACV for Baby Chicks

I will do the ACV. I am not a fan of electrolytes but I do for 3 days the first week and then skip unless I see a problem. I am getting a lot of pasty butt but if ACV will take care of that's great. I was thinking of the VetRx because of the paste-up issue but I also have just one girl that...

Using VetRx, Electorlytes, ACV for Baby Chicks

I am so frustrated trying to find info on VetRx - I see a lot of folks like it for adults but I can't find much info on using it for baby chicks (days old). I'd appreciate thoughts on using this product with baby chicks (currently 5 days old) and/or mixing it in with drinking water that also...
