Hi, I seem to have ants living in the walls of my coop. I contacted the manufacturer of the spray we use around the outside of our house, and they advised against using it on the chicken coop. What can I use to get rid of the ant colony without being bad for the chickens?
I love this setup... I don't think I will ever go back to raising chicks in the garage with a heat lamp:-) My chicks are just 12 weeks old and are mostly roosting in the nest boxes now, so I will soon take the heating pad out. It's down to the '1' setting anyway. My question is, how soon do...
Keep in mind that wild birds can have mites, so it's likely to be a recurring problem. I'm dealing with them too... I've been using Orange Guard in the coop, and while I'm sure it's not as effective as permethrin, I do see a difference. As far as scaly leg goes, I've treated pet budgies...
I suppose... why would a predator first, go into a pen with a rooster, and then leave the chick? And again, it was clearly a puncture rather than a bite. Trust me, I don't want to deal with a murderous older bird so I'd almost rather it was a predator, but it doesn't seem like it fits the scenario.
Things have been going well... I cut the little doors for the chicks to go in and out, bought feed for everybody and replaced the layer feed; everything has seemed fine, now today I found one of my chicks dead under the coop with one puncture wound at the base of the neck/front of the breast...
I was pretty sure that young birds shouldn't be eating layer feed; a guy at my LFS told me I should just feed layer crumbles so 'they would all be able to eat it'. I have hens, a roo, and 6 week pullets. I just told him, ok, then I don't need anything today. After a little surfing BYC, my...
I'm sorry your family is not being supportive... I think I would just tell them I'm not talking to them about that subject anymore, and then stick to it. I hope you can find somewhere that will let you keep your chickens.
Cabbage is one of my favorite things to use- the worms like it and yes, it dries up rather than getting moldy. I've tried potatoes but they don't seem to like them much, they never eat all before they dry up and get hard. Carrots and broccoli stems work well for me too. Apples are nice because...
Awesome:-) Thanks!! Since mine is inside the coop, I think cardboard will work well enough; plus then I won't need power tools, lol. Cardboard and duct tape!!:-D
Ok, no answer to my question, so I contacted Bonide, the manufacturer of the sulfur dust I already have... here is the reply: "the master label for Sulfur Plant Fungicide does state that it can be used on poultry, "POULTRY (except California) - Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese, Game Birds and...
Thanks for the replies, and for the compliment, aart Now I just have to figure out how to do the chickie door(s)... I can easily cut openings in the hardware cloth but I'm not sure how to do it in a way that allows me to close them again if necessary, and to avoid sharp edges. Suggestions are...
