Beautiful coop! May I give you one little suggestion? I have my feeder under my raised coop like you do. I actually made a permanent box style feeder that I can fill up from the outside, but I can't get in there to clean it out if dirt gets in it because I didn't make an easy access door. I...
Well, both mamas are in the coop but separated. I tried today to see how they would react to each other and Brownie tore into Charlie when she came into her space. Then I thought I would take one of Charlie's babies and put it in with Brownie's. Brownie could tell the difference and tried to...
AWWWWwwww crud! I was hoping not to have to hear that! I guess what I will try doing is giving the incubator babies to Charlie and then put them all back out in the coop. If she tries to take Brownie's babies, I will have to just give Brownie all the babies and then just get rid of Charlie...
How soon after hatch does this occur? I have one that just won't stand for anything. It just lays on it's stomach.... seems lethargic and won't even cheep much. It seems to be breathing okay and healthy otherwise. Are there any other symptoms, besides it's legs in the 'split' position? Like...
I posted this a few hours ago in the behavior section, without response (yet). I thought I'd post it here since maybe there will be more traffic????
Our situation... Brownie, a 1st time mama, just hatched out babies yesterday/today in the coop nest box. When Charlie, a one-time experienced...
She's out and so so lonely! I'll open the bator quickly tonight after dark and snatch her out really quick to put her under mama. I hope my bator hatch tomorrow so they won't be too far behind. The mama's babies are due to hatch tomorrow evening and my bator eggs are due to hatch on Tuesday...
I marked my eggs and just let her go. I've done this one other time, too. Just make her a little 'safe' place in the coop for her and her babies once they start moving around. I put a small dog crate with the door off for her to sit with her babies so they would be protected from the other...
I brought the chick/egg in and put it in the incubator. It is still breathing I will keep my eye on it and see what happens. Thank you. I'm thinking that since the head/face can get air, it will probably be fine as long as it has time for the yolk sack to absorb. In a day or two if I still...
I came home this evening to find that another chicken had gotten into the broody's nest and laid an egg.... and it totally broke under her. As I checked the other eggs I found one that was crushed at the big end (doesn't look like a pip at all) and the membrane looked like it was shrink wrapped...
Hey, don't lose hope yet.... they haven't even reached day 21 yet.... I've only incubated one other time (mine now are due on 5/11)... but I've heard it can take a few days AFTER the pip for them to hatch. Maybe the chick is just resting. Wait it out, and don't open..... I know it is hard...
They are probably fine if was only for about 6 hours or so. By this time the eggs are kept somewhat warm from the chick's body heat. Now that you've got them in the bator just make sure you don't open it since you should be on lockdown. Also, don't put these new babies in with the mama until...
I leave my broody in with all the other girls. I mark her eggs and take out any new ones each day. I suppose the eggs are fine to eat. I've not had any problems. LOL I think sitting on them for several hours won't hurt them.
