I don't know what to do. About 12 weeks ago, my chickens started molting which was fine because I expected it. I know that a molt is supposed to last about 6-8 weeks long. About 2 weeks ago I started getting 2 eggs a day (out of 12) and then 1 week ago it stopped. We have hardly gotten any...
Extension cords are great. I have one outlet about 50 feet from my coup and I have a long extension cord. We have a heater under the water which is very very useful! When I first put it out there, I thought the chickens would peck at it but they don't.
Ok so about 3 weeks ago I had a Buff Orpington (according to the Breed Index they go broody frequently) that decided to go broody and if anyone got near the nesting boxes she would scream at them like a bald eagle. I decided the day after that I would separate her and let her sit on her eggs...
Ok so apparently barred rocks only "play" broody which is fine. I have 5 of them who like to lay on the nest for about 2 days and jump off. Well now I have 2 Buff Orpingtons and one of them decided to go broody which is fine, she can have the eggs I don't care. However, I have 4 nesting boxes...
Could it be a Wyandot? My friend has a bird that looks like that. Here's is only black and white (no brown) with a single comb just like that one. I heard that wyandot's can have several different kinds of coloring to them. Definitely pullet by the way.
I think even the sweetest rooster has the potential to be a pain. Just keep him and line, and everything will be fine. I have the sweetest roo right now. He is very timid but I had to boot him the other day because he jumped at me.
He is so pretty! Some roosters don't crow. Most do but some don't. Do you have any other roos? Sometimes they won't crow unless they have someone else who is crowing and they have someone to compete with.
Roosters are only a threat to things that have the potential of dominating them. Its the hens you have to worry about. I added "teenage" chickens to my flock once and the roosters ignored them but my hens beat up on them all the time. One hen actually grabbed the neck feathers of one of them...
It gets really cold at my house, considering that I live in the mountains. I have barred rocks, buff orpingtons, and 1 New Hampshire Red. If you look in the breed index, they will tell you if its good for cold weather or not.
