Chicken math hit me and my husband hard at TSC the other day. We went in with zero intention to get babies. Then my husband said get 9. I said no and then we settled on six. We ended up with nine.
3 Rhode Island Reds (all pullets)
3 black Jersey Giants (straight run)
3 Barred Rocks (straight...
Hello!!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted. But I’m back with an update since life has kind of chilled out of a moment.
Back story: I bought my first flock back in May of last year? Maybe? Around there for sure. I bought 10 altogether, but lost 4 after we moved them into their new coop...
It’s not the best picture. Little bugger was running from me. 😅 I didn’t wanna freak her out so I didn’t try again. I’ll try to get a better picture later when I round them up to put them back up.
Today I was surprised to find the very first egg in my flock!! I’m not 100% sure which of the ladies laid it, but I suspect it’s the one I previously thought was a Roo. It’s a speckled white light brownish color I think.
Any thoughts on the breed of the chicken who laid it? The reason I ask is...

I thought this was a female but the bigger it gets the more I think it’s a male. My other chickens are kinda poofy and big, this one is more sleek and slim. What do you think?
Unfortunately something happened to the batch of chicks and they weren’t going to be available. So, we opted out of getting them and are going to focus on this flock and look into buying more in the spring. We still don’t know what happened to our last leghorn, but so far all of the other kids...
Here is an update of my girls. At least, I’m assuming they’re all girls. The four whites, I haven’t a clue on the breed. The other two are Saphhire Gem and Australorp. I’m guessing they’re around 12 weeks or so
I didn’t think to check the vents. They’re about 6-7 weeks old. I’m almost positive nothing got in. I searched all around and there wasn’t any signs that she had struggle or gotten injured. We do have mice, but I didn’t know they would be a problem. I’ve never seen a rat or weasel around here so...
