Hey this is the reason I popped on the board here tonight to post pictures of my beloved Buff named Winnie. I don’t want to hijack a thread but her neck looks like that too ! I thought it was too late in the season for a molt but I am no expert.
Here is a pic or two - looks like the same thing...
Ok so wanted to update this thread. I did add to the perch with a solid piece wood - I put a bucket in the corner where the Barred Rock was laying. She then started laying under the nest boxes. Then I put a few old boxes under nest boxes one a week to scoot her down so she’d lay closer to back...
Ok so here is the story - we ordered 6 hens last winter and this spring we received the exact breed and sex for all six. Healthy beautiful birds. (Meyer Hatchery) 2 brown egg, Plymouth Rock and Buff Orpington, 2 white egg, brown and white leghorns, and two blue egg layers, Easter Eggers.
Well...
Ok so I'm going back to the starter grower they were raised on and hanging a "help yourself" oyster shell feeder.
What other things could I do to get them more protein ? Can you actually feed them too much protein ?
I read somewhere chickens love cat food. The Purina Naturals dry cat food we...
Going to give this feed a try for the rest of the winter. 16% compared to the 13% they were getting. Is that 16% a pretty decent number ? You know thinking about it normal feather pecking would leave feathers about. There is none other than an occasional one here and there. Need to get these...
Space wise, the Coop is 5'x6' - and the run is 6'x12' and houses 7 birds.
Is there a feed that offers more protein? The flock only gets an occasional organic scratch other than the feed listed above.
Thanks
Birds are 9 months old and enjoy a nice diet consisting of Natures Best Egg Layer Pellets
With 16% protein.
Not sure if only one bird would start pecking all the others if it was protein issues. But I am asking because I don't know - why wouldn't the rest be pecking as well ?
Anyway thank...
Thank you for the reply.. OMG that other thread !
I believe I ought re-home her. I can't have all of them pecked up and her all fancy... At another "farm" she may lose her place in the pecking order and learn to behave ? I don't know what to do or try first but my patience is already about gone.
We have a problem here at the Fox Farm. At first one of our hens was fuzzy on her back at the base of her tail. Then bare. Now, all the other 5 have fuzzy picked at feathers at the same spot. So 6 of the 7... ONE lady is in perfect condition and thats the one we have noticed is pecking the...
Still the same... but maybe I'm seeing the same early signs on some of the others. And watching a while yesterday, noticed the one that has no muzzy feathers was poking at the others, right at the base of their tails. So looking up feather picking I do see pictures that resemble exactly what she...
Well as far as how long - she always looked fuzzy - her name is Muzzy. But now it's worse and missing feathers. It's been worse for a e few weeks now.
I would love to check her for mites - how does one do that and I will do that tomorrow ! And will look for the Vetericyn tomorrow as well ...
