    Chicken suddenly started eating shavings

When I tried putting her back with her flock a second time a couple days later she was no longer eating the shavings and has been doing fine since. I wish I had something more helpful to say! I’m not sure where you live but my next plan if the problem continued was to try a different brand of...

    Chicken suddenly started eating shavings

Sorry if my post was confusing…they do always have food and a good sized run. I put her in a crate without food for 24 hours when I discovered her crop was impacted, which is what I understand should be done for an impacted crop. The crate did still have shavings in it when she had no food for...

    Chicken suddenly started eating shavings

One of my 3 year old hens recently had an impacted crop. It was full mostly of grit but also some pine shavings. I suspected the shavings got eaten when she was in the kennel with them without food for 24 hours. I removed the pine shavings from the crate and added some of the nesting box...

Sudden Death - how long to rule out HPAI?

She was a very large 4 year old hen with a lot of fat between her legs. I had taken her to the vet in February because she had developed slight bumble foot and I thought her belly was swollen. I was concerned about ascites at that time but there was no fluid, just a lot of fat. We treated the...

Sudden Death - how long to rule out HPAI?

I found one of my hens dead Monday afternoon. She was fine that morning with no visible signs of anything. I suspect based on her history a heart or liver issue. We are now 48 hours from the time I found her and everyone else seems fine. I did hear a couple of sneezes from one hen this afternoon...

    Rooster noise meanings

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a resource with videos in one place with a variety of rooster noises and their meanings? I could probably compile quite a few because this guy makes A LOT of different noises, way more than our other rooster, but I would need help putting together what they mean...

    Rooster noise meanings

Thanks! He’s only 6-7 months old but seems to be headed for being a really good rooster. He gets in the nesting boxes and gives the girls little talks about them, he shows them where the treats are and even sings the egg song. I just wasn’t sure if this sound was for her or for me.

This is not my video but this rooster is making the same noise.

    Rooster noise meanings

That’s weird. I can hear it when I play the video. Is your volume all the way up? It sounds like a rusty door hinge. I am guessing a trill is higher pitched and he does also make a sound like that occasionally, I wouldn’t describe this sound as a roar either though.

    Rooster noise meanings

Is there a source somewhere with audio or video with rooster noises and their meaning? One of our two roosters makes an extremely wide range of noises. Some of them you can tell what they mean by the situation, others not so much. This video for example, is this what is called purring? Is he...

6 Month Old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Rooster in Oregon needs new home

I can’t figure out if I can edit this post, but on the advice above; if you would like him but don’t like the idea of me coming to see where he’d be living, let’s talk and see if we can compromise. I just really want to make sure he gets a good home.

6 Month Old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Rooster in Oregon needs new home

We got chicks in August. We ordered hens but ended up with two roosters. Up until recently things had been going well with everyone and the plan was to keep them both if we could. However, the two boys have started fighting. We've considered all of our options and have decided that if we can...

    New to roosters...

We definitely do not want to hatch any eggs.

    New to roosters...

We definitely will not be letting eggs hatch. Culling is not something I’m capable of and as it stands now 16 chickens is more than enough for us.

    New to roosters...

Thank you, that does make me more hopeful that it may work out with everyone living together and that article is very interesting and informative.
