I didn't but I used very small screws & spaced them out.

I did, extra staples and some small screws & washers.

So far mine is holding up well. I added a door on the other side and fenced off a corner of the yard so they can have a little room to roam during the day when I'm home & can keep an ear out for them.

I use sand that we had in old sand bags during the risk of flooding last winter... I'm guessing its construction sand. And I'll throw out larger grit once a week after raking the run, gives them larger options. I agree, they seem to find what they need!
