I hope you are right. I really don't want any roosters. One neighbor isn't exactly thrilled about the hens clucking when they lay. A rooster might set him over the edge.
I had a broody hen so I got some fertilized eggs from a neighbor for her to hatch. The chicks are now 9 weeks old and one is biting the mother in the neck. This is not a peck it is a definite bite. It bites and holds on. Last night was the first night the mother roosted with the other hens. Do...
Poor Henry Rita still seem lethargic and uncomfortable even after we got her to expel the egg, she seems to be pushing. I'm not sure if she is pooping. I am also not sure how long she has been bound. Possibly 2 days. This is a guess based on the fact that we have been 1 egg short for 2 days.
This is my first flock of chickens I think they are red star and Rhode island reds. I know very little about chickens. Ester looks perfectly healthy she's bigger than the others and she acts lazy only occasionally.
One of my hens (5 months old) is acting strange. While the others are running around chasing bugs during their evening free range, Ester sometimes just stands and stares. She won't eat any of the special treats we offer and she usually roosts earlier than the others. She has done this before and...
My chickens are just starting to lay on a regular basis. Every other day or so we have an odd shaped thin shelled egg. Also we have a problem with at least one of our hens laying outside the coop and run, during the evening free range. The first night the egg was not complete, no yolk, and not...
My my girls just started laying. The problem is that they have laid one in the run, one from the roost, that one obviously broke, and four in one nest box. Will they eventually use the nest boxes? We have six boxes and they have only used one. We think only two of the hens are laying. Six eggs...
My husband has been giving our chickens salted sunflower seeds, just as a little treat. Is this OK? They really seem to love them. He just gives them a little from the palm of his hand. Less than an ounce per day divided among 6 chickens.
Our cat Larz watched over the chicks from the day they came home from the feed store in April.. Even when we free range the chickens he is there to keep them together. Recently the smallest hen Odessa (a rode island red) has taken to chasing Larz. Larz still watches over the chickens but from a...
