Problem: Yolks Break Easily or are Broken Inside Egg

I did some more research after posting, it appears adding carotenoids into the chicken diet can strengthen the wall of the yolk. Foods like carrots, spinach, kale and meats like mealworms can help. It's worth a shot.

Problem: Yolks Break Easily or are Broken Inside Egg

I'm glad I stumbled upon this post. I was having the same problem and posted on FB. The people on there were insistent it's diet and started comparing chickens to humans. First off, all my chickens get the same feed, about 95% organic layer feed and 5% treats. The chicken with said issue is the...

    Dutch Bantams

Hi! We purchased some Dutch Bantams (blue- light brown) for my daughter's 4 h chickens. I need a few more hens and am having the worst time finding anyone with them. Also, I am not sure if our birds are up to quality standard or not. They fit the standards per the APA guide, but I know there can...

    Egg trouble

My husband was out of town so she has only had pellets since Thursday 8/10. She is 16 months old. I was wondering if it was stress, but I don't know what to do to decrease it. We have 4 water stations and 3 food stations for 7 birds. 300sq ft run.

    Egg trouble

I have a chicken laying in weird patterns. Some days shells are super soft and break immediately, other days they are formed but not full hard shell consistency. Some days normal. I have asked on other forums with no help. She is on laying pellets and gets fresh fruits veggies and occasionally...

Can chickens bruise their comb? This is new within the last day or 2. Eating and drinking fine. The whole flock has been together for a few weeks. She is second from the top of the pecking order. She has blukote on because she was our roosters favorite. He was moved to his own pen 3-4 weeks ago...

    Autosexing with the barring gene

I'm not sure if this helps at all. This is our Wheaten Ameraucana (male) x Barred Rock (female). According to all the research I have done it should be a rooster. The last 2 pics are 2 days old, the top 1week and middle 2 today 4.5 weeks. (It changed th order when I posted)

    Crossing breeds-

Thanks for the link but the help tab is in a different language and I have no clue where a Wheaten roo would fall color wise?

    Crossing breeds-

I have a Wheaten Ameraucana Roo and a Barred rock hen baby that we hatched. I have done a ton of research and all I am finding contradicts each other. On the one side it says the baby is a sexlink chick- white spot on head and barring a boy, no spot colors like dad girl. The other side says...

    Shaking head

I purchased a hen in really bad shape from a farm. She is in need of a lot of TLC. She has been in quarantine for the last 3 weeks. She has had 2 baths (I don't see mites or lice), she has been wormed and she has unlimited access to food and water. I have noticed when I go out and see her, she...

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi! I just got a new chick. Parents are lavender Ameraucanas. The chick is black with black legs? I'm confused. So I am guessing I have an EE and there was leakage? Can someone explain how you get a black chick out of lavender parents?
