    Medicating

I may have messed up. I hatched 8 chicks successfully and all seem healthy but I’m just now finding out about medicating them. What I read had them on a schedule with one vaccination at a few days old etc. My chicks are 8 weeks old; is it too late? I prefer putting medication in the water...

After I had something get in my coop and injured some hens they quit laying for a month. Just leave them alone for a while and hopefully they'll come around.

    New B

Hens typically do not crow and I say that because it is possible than a hen will take on the role of a rooster if there is not one present. However, it has only happened to my group of hens one time and that was after we lost a rooster which had been around for years. This hen even jumped on the...

How many hours of daylight and how many watts

Mine start laying around Feb 1 and lay through or up to the first of November. I am in Kentucky and in Feb we only have about 10 hours of light; same for November. So I don't believe the 14 hour theory.

Pasty butt help - best way to remove?

The Polish seem to be the worst about pasty butt. I hold the chick in my hand and run warm water over its rear and gently wipe with a paper towel. It doesn't come off very easily but the chick shouldn't squirm too bad if using water that's not too cold or too hot.

    WORMS HELP!!!!!

Quote: Wow, your vet actually said that? They can live with the worms, but the worms scar their digestive tract and any place they scar is thereafter a place where nutrients aren't absorbed. They predispose the animal to secondary illnesse, inflame the ceca, make the bird more susceptible to...

hepl me diagnose my red star hen's condition please-added poop pics

I don't want to assume that your hen has the same problem as mine but I had a 1 year old Red Star that was my best egg layer. Her eggs were HUGE. One day she went to the nest box and was there for 2 days. I thought, finally, she's turning broody on me. Well, after she sat there for 2 days and...

    HELP! discoloration

My 1 year old roosters red comb and waddle is beginning to turn a pasty white color in places. It's up around his eye area too. I've looked really close at it to see if he has mites or anything on it and it doesn't appear so. What could this be? Should I be concerned? None of the hens...

    Snake season

A black cow snake got into my coop a month ago and ate one of my 4 week old baby chicks. I was devasted. I was also surprised by the size of the snake and wondered how he could slither through the chicken wire with his size... he did! But he would have never made it out until that baby was...

    Coccidiosis treatment in baby chicks

I've searched the past forums for this topic but haven't found it yet. My question is, "At what age can I start treatment for coccidiosis?" I have older birds which have been tested positive for cocci and it was recommended that I pre-treat (build up their immunity) my babies before mixing...
