    Pin feathers around vent

It's normal pinkish skin color. This is the best close-up picture I've gotten (though it's a month old now, still looks similar). Maybe they are broken? I haven't seen that before.

    Pin feathers around vent

Hello, My 1.5 y/o Buff Orpington is missing feathers around her vent. She's not completely bald there; there are pin feathers ~1/4 inch long. This has lasted over a month. I first thought it was the tail end (ha ha) of her molt, but now I'm perplexed. I can't see any obvious parasites or blood...

    ALABAMA!!

Thanks!! After a year of peace, he has shown aggression towards my mom in the last week after she handled a hen near him, which is the reason for rehoming. No known health issues, but we do understand the quarantine. My mom is willing to transport him to you, if the offer still stands. Thanks...

    Single bachelor pad

Thanks. We are also looking at rehoming options, but short-term it seems separation is the best option there.

    Single bachelor pad

Posting for my mom/ mom's flock. Two reasons-- he came at her this week when she was handling a hen. (First time that's happened, but we do not want it to happen again.) And, she is getting ready to add a new batch of pullets who may be too young (7 weeks) to mingle with him.

    Single bachelor pad

Can a single rooster be kept separated by fencing from hens (so, within eyeshot/earshot and able to touch beaks)? Not sure if this would lead to rooster insanity or not. (And, if so, whether there is a better strategy to separate them, such as moving him far away?)

    ALABAMA!!

I am trying to help my mom rehome a rooster in Mississippi/Alabama. He is a white plymouth rock and just turned 1 this month. I'm not in the area so am looking for any leads on farm sanctuaries, rescues, or anywhere he can live out his natural life (not be dinner). Thanks in advance.

    Broodiness or Something Else?

Thanks, she ended up coming off the nest around 9am without having laid and has been acting normally in the run since. So I'll expect to see her lay even later today or possibly tomorrow AM if she is transitioning like you mentioned. I only have the 3 hens, all 6-7 months old. The white rock...

    Broodiness or Something Else?

I have a white rock who was laying very regularly in late morning, in the coop from about 11-12. The last few days, I noticed she has been coming out later, yesterday around 4pm. (I was at work so I'm not sure how long she was in there laying/sitting.) Also, the last two eggs have had some tiny...

    Welsummer Laying in Florida

I have a 27-week-old Welsummer who hasn't started laying. I've heard that chickens who would otherwise start laying in the winter can delay laying any eggs until days are longer. But, I'm in North Florida, so I assumed that didn't apply here? My other pullet her age, a White Plymouth Rock...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Also, if you're not 100% sure that the noise they're making is crowing, this thread is full of people who can consider photos and descriptions for you to confirm whether your chicks are males. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/what-breed-or-gender-is-this.15/

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi, I had a similar experience recently (2 of 4 "female" chicks turned out to be male :(). I ended up finding a home for one with a family member in a rural area, and I found a home for the second by searching for "farm animal sanctuaries" online. (My search was mostly in GA/ North FL, so I'm...

    How to replenish flock

I ordered 3 pullets in May and received 4 birds. After several weeks I discovered that 2/4 were cockerels. After much effort, I've rehomed one (not allowed where I live) and am hoping to find a home for the 2nd soon. Which will leave me with two 3-month-old pullets in August (one Welsummer, one...
