What did you pay for your chicks?

A friend reccomend another farm. I bought a blue orpington and a splash orpington for $10 each, an easter egger for $2 and olive egger for $5. It seemed like they really cared about breeding quality birds and taking care of their flock. It all seemed like a good price to me.

What did you pay for your chicks?

A local farm is selling week old chicks from $10-$17. That seems pretty high to me. My first chicks about 5 years ago were $2. The last ones I but were $4. So, what did you pay for your chicks?

    Texas City, TX

When I was planning my move, I contacted the animal control department for each town and looked up the municipal codes. Make sure that you are not moving to a home with an HOA with their own rules as well.

    Silkie thread!

Ok, thanks for the information. I figured that it was just bleaching from the sun because they free range all day, but wanted to check.

I have a 4 yr old black silkie that has started to brown recently in spots. It looks like she is being bleached. Is this normal for silkies or black chickens in general?

    The cost of building coop??

I posted an ad on craigslist in the free section, asking for old lumber. I got a bunch of old fence pickets and other lumber and built a nice coop and didn't spend a penny on wood.

Do chicks need the heat lamp constantly?

Just pay attention to your chicks. They will let you know if they are warm enough by their behavior.

    dried egg stuck in feathers

I will make a long story short. An egg was broken inside the nest box and my black silkie decide to lay down in it. The dried egg is stuck to her feathers and I don't know how to get her clean. Does anybody have tips for cleaning her up?

Sod in run idea - what do you think

Maybe a tractor would be a good idea. You can move it around the yard to different spots everyday so they will always have fresh grass. It will fertilize the yard naturally too.

    Cedar Shavings For Nesting Boxes?

People smoke cigarettes for 20 years and have "no problems" as well, but I wouldn't reccomend it. It is better to be safe than sorry.

    Broody with mites

Get the Sevin dust on her ASAP to get rid of the mites. They are draining her blood and making her weak. It wouldn't hurt to give her poly-vi-sol, it is liquid infant vitamins that you can get at any drug store and grocery stores.

    Broody with mites

My buff orpington has been acting broody for close to 2 weeks. I would try to get her out of the nest and walk around and she would always just puff her feathers up, walk around a little and go back in. She didn't look right the way that she was puffed up and the other girls would peck at...
