My biggest mistake with my hens when they were babies was NOT holding them more. Out of my dozen chixs only 3 ended up becoming adult hens that like (& allow ) me to hold them for any length of time. You don’t want to hold them too much - there is a line you don’t want to cross else they won’t...
I’ve used organic apple cider vinegar in my hens water from when I brought them home @2 days old..... they have been really healthy girls for 3 yrs. as someone else noted above no more than a tablespoon/ gal. Plastic not metal watered.
I'm worried sick over my 3 yr old australorpe. Looking for recommendations from experienced chicken moms and dads.
She's on day 2 of lethargy - she stands still like a statue sort of dazed, feathers sort of puffed up. I have no clue if she's been eating or drinking (doubtful though based on...
I live in upstate NY outside of Saratoga Sprgs. My girls were about 5-6 weeks old when they spent their 1st night outside in their coop late May/ early June (they're approaching their 3rd b-day). We had to help them come down their ladder the 1st couple times from the coop to their outside...
Thanks so much for your insight. Who knew there was such a thing as a 'good if used by date' ! Great advice - I will pay attention to that go forward. by the way - What is an 'all flock' feed? I do give my girls oyster shell.
Thank for sharing your experience. My hens too virtually stopped eating prior to me changing their food to the higher protein ... the change to 18% was 2-fold: 1) I read about importance of protein during the molt and 2) I thought the change in food would entice them to eat (it didn't).
Thank you for taking time to reply. When you say you don't feed layer feed anymore, what kind of feed is there if it's not grower (for babies) or layer?
Looking for information & advice for my 9 hens. The girls are 18 months old & going through their first molt. They have drastically reduced amount of layer food they eat at about the sane time I noticed them losing feathers. I historically gave them organic layer food (16% protein) & just this...
You are not alone - it happened to me today. Amazing ! One of my Auracuana hens laid 2 eggs today. She is one of 9 hens, the only Auracuana and the only one that lays blue/green eggs (so I know it was her). My hens will be 11 months old in April.
I would say it's the pecking order starting to show itself. I have a silver laced wyandotte that is larger than all the others and is also a picker/ pecker at the other hens. I hate it and hate to see it. I want to swoop in and protect the others. But is not the chicken way :)
My...
