The young bird did die. I thought she was sleeping the other night when I looked in on her but in retrospect she was a bit fluffed up. She's about 10 weeks old so I wasn't monitoring the temp in their pen. Other than that, nothing from either of them. No runny nose, no cough, no weird poop...
Yesterday I had a younger bird (one of my Marans) keeled over almost dead. It was hardly moving and was breathing so little I thought it was actually dead when I first saw it. The only reason I knew it was alive was because its leg moved ever so slightly after one of the other chickens bumped...
I don't think so. They were laying every single day and they are one of the best layers so it has me stumped. I've had some soft eggs but don't know which bird they are from. They always have plenty of calcium so I'm just not sure what's going on.
Spoke with someone on the Kenai Penninsula. She's coming up to the Valley next weekend and will be bringing five month old chicks (hopefully all pullets) up for me. Hopefully they can be what I'm looking for.
Sounds like you had a girl lay two! It's totally possible. And as for when they lay, I've collected my last egg after 7pm because some of my girls just take forever to get to it :)
This was a record length winter for Anchorage. I'm only 25 but I've lived here my whole life and this is the latest I ever remember having snow. It's awful :(. As for the leghorns, mine are doing fine. When it gets super cold slap some Vaseline on to protect from frostbite. I got several a...
Apparently I was crazy when I thought they were moving. We cracked into them today and every single one had nothing but yolk slide out. Don't think I'll buy from that lady again. I also don't know that I'll incubate again. If rather just spend the money on chicks, now I just need to hope I...
See, the last commercial bird farm up here closed down a couple years ago, so no farms to compete with. Despite NOT living in a farm, the people I meet from Anchorage who bring me unwanted roosters all assume I live on one. Silly city people. I'm just making due on my 3/4 acre. Maybe someday...
