So chicken math finally got the better of me and at the beginning of May I bought 6 Khaki Campbell ducks. Well its starting to look like I have 1 duck and 5 drakes. Of course I cant keep them like that. I am giving them until I come back from vacation this month on the 24th before I go...
I find giving them treats once in awhile helps.. Or you can do what I did and with hold treats and threaten. About a month after I stopped giving treats I started to get eggs.
Well the friend that told me all that about the chickens actually grew up on a farm of sorts down the road from me so when she started spouting the nonsense I'm sure I looked at her like she had three heads. Then I did the whole chickens don't need a rooster to lay eggs just like you don't need...
I'm going with bbq. BBQ is always good. You're telling me. I work in retail so I deal with city people every summer and most of them that come into the store I work for have a bad attitude like they are better than everyone else, but most of them seem to have common sense.
Didn't even go...
After reading so many pages of this I thought I should add my own. I was telling my friend who was visiting recently that I was waiting for my chickens to start laying eggs and that my DH finally put a light up there for me. Her response was that since I haven't had them for a year I won't be...
I agree with the sex links. I have a red one myself and wish I had gotten more. She is probably the friendliest of the bunch I have and regularly lays me a wonderfully brown egg a day. Quite large eggs at that. Not to mention I think the coloring of her feathers is quite lovely. The red on...
I have Black Australorps, Easter Eggers, Red Sex Link, Light Brahma, Jersey Giant, and Silver Laced Wyandotte. I have to say my favorite out of all of the are the EEs, Red Sex Link, and Light Brahma. My EE's keep up in laying with my Red Sex Link and are more personable then the others I find...
I definitely recommend EEs. I love mine. I have one girl who lays for four or five days and then takes just one day off before getting back into the swing of things. So far the other two I have laying seem to be in the same pattern. The only downside to them is they take a while to mature...
Don't know if you've decided on breeds yet, but I have to recommend EEs. I have five. One of them started laying two weeks ago and goes on four or five day stretches of laying with one day off and then back too it. She lays a wonderfully light greenish blue egg. Not to mention just yesterday...
The only thing I can say is bad about these birds is that they take forever to start laying. I got my five easter eggers on June 5th of this year and one finally just started laying the week before Christmas. I had two more follow suit and start laying this week. So far one of the ones that...
If you go to pet the pullet and it squats down and starts to spread its wings out that means it is close to laying. It is hard to tell how long after they start this when they lay eggs. It is usually a couple weeks I believe.
I got my very first egg on Friday. the picture makes it look white, but it is a really really light greenish color.
Definitely came from one of my EEs, not sure which one and then the very next day I had a wonderful brown egg from my Red sex link. I have had the EEs since June (5 altogether)...
