I'm moving to Poland Village from my farm up in Trumbull County. I'd love to move 3 or 4 of my chickens with me. The yard is completely open to those around it, so this is not something I could sneak by the neighbors. I'll be renting and the landlady is fine with it. Did anyone figure out the...
^^^I don't know anything about showing. However, when I was at the Canfield Fair this summer, I don't think there were any Welsummers. That's a pretty big county fair, so it gives you an idea how rare they are.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I listed them on Craigslist about an hour ago (though for only $10 each, prices are much lower here) and I already have someone who is interested in picking them up this weekend!
Well, I do have a second chicken door that I don't really use. I could cover it with hardware cloth. That's not a bad idea.
Yeah, I probably should list the extra 5 or so on Craigslist. I think I'll get on that. Why didn't that occur to me???? Oh, yeah, I'm the almost 40-year-old...
I love my Welsummers. I keep a Welsummer Roo with my hens. Both roosters that I've had have been protective of their girls, but not overly aggressive. They lay a decent number of eggs that are so beautifully dark.
I have a few Speckled Sussex too. They're probably my second favorite. I just...
I have ventilation at the top of all of the walls. I really can't do anything to add more right now, other than open the windows, but I was afraid that would be too drafty. We've been getting wind chill factors as low as -20 this year, last year as low as -45. I'm afraid to leave their door open...
I hadn't used supplemental heat in previous years, but with our first below zero cold snap this year my rooster and several hens suffered frostbite. I added two red light heat lamps, like I used when they were chicks.
Unfortunately, this seems to have them confused. I thought the red lamps...
Thanks for all of the compliments on my pooch! He's a sweetie, but it was challenging having a clumsy Dane and a newly walking toddler. Now that my son is almost 2 it is, thankfully, getting easier.
Processing went well. We just ate our first of the bunch tonight and we are now believers...
SIL: Where is your hubby going?
Me: To pick up my new chicken tractor! Yeah!
SIL: How is a chicken tractor different from a regular tractor?
Me (As I was about to explain how it worked): It's powered by the chickens....
SIL: That's not true! Their little legs are too short!
I...
Argh!
So, we just figured out why the water is still dirty every morning. There are 3 young raccoons living in the rafters of the "new barn"/garage. We'd only caught raccoons at the old barn, and opossums at the "new barn". So, time to set up some live traps. We'll have to put the barn...
Okay, it sounds reasonable. Like I said, $1 a bird sounded crazy low and $3 makes more sense, I just wanted to check and compare. I don't have a problem paying that, because I do know how much work it is.
Thanks!
I just ordered my first round of meat birds - just 11 because I wanna start small (and I'm ordering a few layers for a friend, so the meaties round out my minimum, but they will need to be processed right when my 7 dual purpose cockerels are ready. In the future we'd like to do 25 birds, once a...
We use our dual purpose birds to make things like chicken and noodles since there is minimal breast meat compared to Cornish Cross. We usually cook them all day in the crockpot so the meat is tender (though this guy will be young enough that you shouldn't have a huge issue with him being too...
I've been raising chickens for a few years and love it. Mostly layers, but will be starting some Cornish X for meat next month.
I'm looking into raising a few turkeys next year for meat - Midget Whites, if I can find somewhere to get just 4-6 poults.
I just had a chicken tractor built that...
