    Runt Silver Laced Wyandotte

I hope she is typical of Wyandottes - busy, good foraging, and endlessly curious - because I love how she just gets down to the business of being a chicken. I am really loving this breed so far for those qualities. Black Australorps at this point are coming in on the bottom of the clueless scale.

    Runt Silver Laced Wyandotte

I've got a small flock of seven 6-week old chicks. The most entertaining and forager supreme is the little Silver Laced Wyandotte. That chick must have come out the egg scratching and pecking. She's like a little bulldozer in my flower beds. I've got a question though that I'm curious about...

Who does a Non GMO feed?

Coyote Creek, Elgin Texas. This is only available in Central Texas. Chick starter is $35 per 50 lb bag.

    Breast bone in chicks

I've noticed the exact same thing with my 2 week olds. I know they'll fill out but I've been so used to handling older birds, particularly parrots, that anytime you feel a prominent keel you begin to worry. I think it's fine as long as they're active, eating and drinking well, and feathering...

    Really Hot Day and Chicks

Looks like I mis-heard the forecast. It's Tues, Wed and Thursday that are forecast for 100-102 F. You know, I love the 65 F winters in South Texas, but two or three months of upper 90's to 110 F sure does get to be a real trial. I feel like the chicks. As I get older it's harder to take really...

    Really Hot Day and Chicks

The other thing I thought about doing was putting a baking sheet in the coop with some damp sand.

    Really Hot Day and Chicks

Tomorrow is predicted to be our first really hot day of the summer - 102 F. My chicks are 1 week old and brooding outdoors in their coop. I've got a large Coke bottle in the freezer and am planning on putting that in the coop with them tomorrow in case the heat gets too much for them.

    introduce chick grit?

There seems to be so many opinions on this subject that I'll add my 2 cents. I just got my chicks this week and asked this question on a local backyard chicken forum. They suggested contacting the feed manufacturer if you couldn't find an ingredient list on your chick starter. I am feeding...

[LIST - Over 1,000 names!] Chicken names!

Just got my chicks yesterday and still working out names. My boys and their friends are doing some of the more creative naming: Selma (white leghorn named for my chicken farming grandmother) Princess Bubblegum (Barred Rock taking its name from the cartoon Adventure Time, maybe Bubble for...

What religion do you belong to?

This is a great thread as I find the study of religions one of my favorite interests. I am particularly surprised and interested in the number of Pagans on BYC. I think I'm the first to post this faith group on BYC: Orthodox Christian Raised Lutheran (ELCA) in a German American family...

The Unexpected Costs of Coop Building

$175 for a glass company to replace a window - that's what happens when a 2 x 4 falls into it. Uggh. If anyone asks what it costs to build a chicken coop I'm going to tell them it's not about saving money it's about the eggs and the great chicken pets.

    Monks, Chickens and Goats

I looked Mepkin Abbey up and it's gorgeous - the landscape is perfect for contemplation. Moncks Corner has a fascinating history in itself; settled as early as 1700 by French Huggenots (Wikipedia and the internet know everything). If that certain organization who-shall-not be-named had hassled...

    Monks, Chickens and Goats

Being Orthodox myself I've been around a few monasteries as a visitor and one thing that always strikes me are the large number of farm animals and pets that the monks and nuns always have. I think animals and pets are a basic human need that reconnects us to the Creator. Most monasteries are...

Sorry but I got it wrong - the chicken photos are more in the Farm 2012 gallery.
