I have seen a lot of threads regarding Houston laws, but has anyone had success dealing with the ordinances in Katy? We are on just under half an acre but it looks like we need to be on an acre or more? I have had BYCS for years when I lived out west and didn't expect it to be an issue in Texas.
I forgot to add...
check the other posts in predators and pests. It seems a lot of people are having issues with dogs recently and there have been many great suggestions on how to deal with them.
good luck
If you know whose dog it is I would go talk to them in person first. they might not know that their dog is getting out. Beagles are notorious for following their noses, right out of their own yards! I would talk to them first, then go from there. If the dog comes back again and shows any...
I had a feral cat living in the bushes on our property on the other side of our backyard fence. I tried to be friendly to it, talk to it and leave it food and water (outside the fence). But it always was scared of me. A couple of weeks ago the cat disappeared. I figured it got scared off by...
My husband just called me to tell me he picked up our new chicks, I could hear all the peeping in the background, it was sooo cute! I'm stuck at work though and now all I want to do is go home. this is going to be the longest hour and half of my life.
The other day my daughter and I watched our peacock strut his stuff and dance about with his feathers up for a about an hour. Of course the peahen would have none of it! It must be spring!
That is a really pretty snake. Unfortunately the only ones I get around in my yard are rattlers and you don't want to relocate those! And those DO taste like chicken
I will maybe test it out first, put them in there and see how the polish hens act. if they seem overtly interested in each other I will probably pull them out but if the polish just ignore the new ones maybe I can keep them in for a while and go from there.
Well I'm not quite sure because I am not sure how old my polish hens are, I got them when they were full grown. I think my Polish are 1 -2 years old and the new ones are a couple of weeks maybe a month old.
I have two polish hens, they are probably 1 - 2 years old and we have had them since January. We are getting some younger ones from a neighbor today, including some day old chicks and some older (couple weeks maybe) ones. I am planning on keeping the chicks inside for a while, but how should I...
Lunachick-
Where did you buy your chicks from? I notice that you only got five, the lowest amount I've seen is 25 for a single purchase. I would love to buy some more but I don't want 25.
Cheers! the babies are beautiful. sorry about the dead one though at least the other four made it.
I agree with everything everyone has said here, and this is just my 2 cents
I am on four acres and we have a neighbor about six acres away that lets his dogs run wild! We have a double fence on our property: two acres around the house are fenced, then another 1/4 fence coming off the back...
Kycklingmamma -
Thanks! that is totally awesome and really helped me understand the layout of the inside of an A-frame!! I hope you are able to post more pics of it!
Does anyone have any plans for an easy-to-make A-frame. I pretty much get the general idea of how the outside should go up, but the inside I am confused about, like where to put the nesting boxes, perches, etc.
thanks!
Welcome to BYC! Since you are new to chickens I would recommend that you do a bit of research before getting those chickens. they need to be locked down at night to protect them from predators. this would work great in a fenced chicken run. We have something similiar but we have protection...
I dot have Brits but I have a terrier and a border collie/aussie shepherd mix. Both dogs were originally very interested in the chickens and peacocks when we first got them. After a couple barks, chases, and one close call with one of the chickens and the border collie (found the dog with a...
What a great idea, I think i may copy it! my chickens are free range with a covered box to sleep in, but they mostly just hang out around the box. I was thinking about building a big coop but I think I like your idea better. do you provide them with nesting boxes somewhere or do they nest...
thanks for the warm welcome!
I don't have them locked up, so they get light all day from the sun (they have a shelter they sleep in, but are usually out all day long). If i put a light in their shelter does it have to be a special kind or can I just put a lantern in there?
