Hey! I'm Amy and live in Southern Oregon. I love animals, I have two Texas Longhorns as pets, 10 chickens, 3 cats, and an aquarium. Those are not all our animals though, those are only mine! Altogether we have 6 horses, 2 cows, 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 rabbit, 14 chickens, 2 hermit crabs, and I think...
From reading your post, I'm gathering that your knowledge of chickens is rather, well, petite. I strongly recommend buying a book (or checking one out at your public library) on chickens before you get any. It's critical that you have some background knowledge so you can prevent problems before...
So I got 3 chicks today that I ordered and put them under my broody silkie hen (has been broody for 2-3 weeks). But, the chicks won't stay under her at all and just run around peeping because they get cold. I wanted her to mother them because I like raising them that way better than in a...

I've had that happen before it was crazy! It was just a normal size egg but near the pointy end there was a small white sack and when I opened it, it was a fully formed egg with yoke and everything just in miniature form (the whole thing was about the size of a quarter).
No, no eggs couldnt been hidden in the bedding material, and besides, the chick was found about 30 feet away from the coop
im 99.9% sure it was a chicken, it was fully formed, had down, but its leg was broken.
No feral chickens either. They wouldnt last a day with all the predators out here in...
nope impossible. my chickens are kept in a run pretty much all the time, its large, but no where to hide. and i do i headcount every night to make sure no one is missing.
So, heres a really weird story.
Today I let my chickens out to free range a little bit. When I came to give them leftovers from dinner, I noticed a little dead bird layin on the ground under my sister's bedroom window. When I looked, I noticed it was a chicken, no doubt about it. Still...
I would suggest getting a feeder and putting it inside the henhouse so they have unlimited access to those layer pellets.
I know many people just like throwing the feed on the ground but I believe a lot of it is wasted that way, especially in wet weather, and it can attract varmints and wild...
I hatched out a pullet last February that I named "Speedo". Her daddy's a Rhode Island Red and her mommy's an Easter Egger, some pretty good laying genetics, I would say. Now the thing is, Speedo layed her first egg, ohh back in June I believe. She didn't lay her second egg until more than two...
No, I'm not free-ranging because of hawks, cars, and other pests, but I do let them out every so often. If I do happen to introduce them to each other, it will be when they are free-ranging for that reason. My space is limited so I can't get anymore chickens.
Toby,
What you heard about embryos developing at room temperature is an old wives tale. If that were true, who would have a need for incubators?
Eggs don't begin developing until they are at the right temperature (about 99.5 degrees fahrenheit) and humidity (about 50%) which can either be...
